Step into the role of an engineer and investigate how earthquakes impact the built environment and how structures can be designed to withstand powerful forces. In this course, you will explore concepts such as structural stability, lateral forces and energy transfer, analysing how different design features influence performance during seismic events. Thinking like an engineer, you will design, construct and test model structures using a shake table, evaluating how effectively different strategies reduce damage caused by lateral ground movement. Through investigation and iteration, you will refine your designs, justify your decisions using scientific and mathematical reasoning and respond to the inquiry question, Which structural design strategies most effectively reduce damage during earthquakes?

This course extends your thinking by challenging you to apply engineering principles, analyse cause and effect and develop innovative, evidence based solutions to real world problems.
