Course Overview
Comics now hold a strong place in contemporary literature and society. They span a number of genres, including, amongst others, alternative culture, slapstick comedy, fantasy, science fiction and politics. According to Professor Ben Saunders (UO), comics are one of the most effective forms of communication ever devised. He, and an increasing number of academics, believe, “The question isn’t, `Why should we be studying them?’ but rather, ‘Why haven’t we been studying them for much longer?’”
In this PEAC course, renowned artist Jason Trevenan from Kaboom Toons enables students to unleash their imagination as he leads them through the many aspects of cartooning. They develop the art of caricature, animation and special effects, plus learn how shapes, planning, proportions and posing are all skills needed in creating a convincing illustration. Students are simultaneously taught the requisite literary techniques needed to construct a captivating story. The end product is a powerful, personal publication.
